  4.     When antiwar activists look at an inverted Y inside a circle,
  5. they see a symbol for peace. But some school officials in Pasadena,
  6. Texas, detect something satanic: an upside-down broken cross that
  7. signifies the defeat of Christianity. This week they will vote on
  8. a new student dress code that would allow principals to outlaw the
  9. sign.

  11.     School administrators learned the symbol's devilish
  12. significance at a seminar on cults conducted last spring at the
  13. University of Houston. (The peace sign was devised by British
  14. pacifists who combined the semaphore signs for N and D, standing
  15. for nuclear disarmament.) The proposed ban has drawn some wry
  16. comments from students. Quipped a twelve-year-old: "If they ban
  17. peace symbols, they'll have to ban basic geometry because of all
  18. its lines and circles."
